As many of you know, I was in a bad car wreck when a drunk driver hit me. My car rolled over, but I was miraculously unharmed. However, the car that had been the entire reason I'd felt like I could embark on this musical journey was destroyed, along with the guitar I'd owned since I was a teenager and written all my songs on (that's a story for a different song, though!)
Anyway, I've felt like I've been living on borrowed time ever since then.
It was a kick in the teeth, though, to deal with insurance, finding there's a dollar value to everything and suddenly having to pay for something I'd owned. Your dreams aren't worth as much as you thought they were sometimes.
Musically...well, I give myself one weird song per album, and this one was it for "Backwords." The distorted natural harmonics are a nod to The Cure's live version of "Play for Today" from "Paris"...I tried it and it fit. The airplane noises are slide guitar, volume swells, and a bunch of delay. Thrown in backwards, of course.
lyrics
Sometimes I feel like I died in the crash
& all of my future is bits of my past
cycled back & forth like a revolving door
to a dream that never has been
So I bought a red car so the drunks see it better
It's like the old one had been through a letter shredder
Pieces of black and pieces of blue
twisted up with my dreaming
of making it even
You don't get much for secondhand dreams
When everything's money, nothing is free
Just pennies on the dime
Dry your eyes
& glide through the maelstrom
straight as the crow flies
I want to run away
Take my shiny red car to another state
But the wolf dogs the crow
He will never be far
Anywhere we go
There we are
You don't get much for secondhand dreams
When everything's money, no one is free
Just pennies on the dime
Dry your eyes
& glide through the maelstrom
& try not to cry
You don't get much for secondhand dreams
When everything's money, no one is free
Just pennies on the dime
Dry your eyes
& glide through the maelstrom
straight as the crow flies
