California

about

This is very much a sister-song to the title track in terms of theme; I wrote them both in the same week. I think the horn-section is a first for a Dale Wicks song! This one started life as a Jimmy Eat World-esque rocker, which is where the four-on-the-floor beat entered in. I jammed it at an open mic with my friend Joel Stob when he was in town, though, and I thought about taking it in a different direction.

lyrics

I've never been to California
I've never been too self-assured
I never bent over backwards to have the last word
I want to write you a letter
I want to right what I put wrong
I was wrong & I'm sorry
Thought you had a right to know

Time & time again
I took too much time again
& it took you far too far away from me
I wasted time & it's time that I see how time has wasted me
How time has wasted me

You never said you'd never need me
You never settled for my best
You never set down all those things you carried
So deep inside your chest
You wanted peace & quiet
You got another piece of me
It's all that I could piece together
Rest in peace & memory

Oh, & time again
I took too much time again
& it took you far too far away from me
I wasted time & it's time that I see how time has wasted me
How time has wasted me

I've never been to California
Time has wasted me
Time has wasted me
I've never been to California
Time has wasted me
Time has wasted me
