Electric boat on the cool, wide water Lightning motor on a liquid lie Metal airplane, light as a feather Lazy looping circus in the sky The irony & madness in the world in which we live May steal from us more than it gives Distant folks, closer than a whisper Distant whispers make a stranger of a friend Surrounding music, impossible to listen A thing so precious doesn't cost you a cent The irony & madness in the world in which we live May steal from us more than it gives Every day, constant stimulation breeds a numbness born of too much to feel Twisting wisdom into information Cannot make your reality more real The irony & madness in the world in which we live May steal from us more than it gives Electric boat on the cool, wide water Lightning motor on a liquid lie

Backwords 04:09
I can hear the screaming in the silence I can feel the distance in a touch I remember forgetting myself in memories of youth & never coming out Is that what my life's about? Morning comes & I'm just another runner in the human race upon the course of life One more song sung to someone who is gone in front of people who are not listening People I agree with don't agree with me I can't feel their anger anymore But people I abandon don't abandon me & it means the world to see them at my door Morning comes & I'm just another runner in the human race upon the course of life One more song sung to someone who is gone in front of people who are not listening Who are not listening Maybe there's a way I can feel the things I say And not say them to fit in the way I have again I was thinking of a girl when I was thinking of my world Now the girl has gone away & I'm where I am today & then tomorrow Morning comes & I'm just another runner in the human race upon the course of life One more song sung to someone who is gone in front of people who are not listening But it's all I know & I'll go to bed a-lone before I'll listen to what I don't want to hear So say goodnight & live another life & I'll be waiting with my memories of us

California 03:50
I've never been to California I've never been too self-assured I never bent over backwards to have the last word I want to write you a letter I want to right what I put wrong I was wrong & I'm sorry Thought you had a right to know Time & time again I took too much time again & it took you far too far away from me I wasted time & it's time that I see how time has wasted me How time has wasted me You never said you'd never need me You never settled for my best You never set down all those things you carried So deep inside your chest You wanted peace & quiet You got another piece of me It's all that I could piece together Rest in peace & memory Oh, & time again I took too much time again & it took you far too far away from me I wasted time & it's time that I see how time has wasted me How time has wasted me I've never been to California Time has wasted me Time has wasted me I've never been to California Time has wasted me Time has wasted me

Balloon 05:30
It takes a lifetime not to live a lifetime You'll decide who you decide to be Or talk yourself through any condemnation Enlightenment's not worth this misery Head so wide Nothing inside Stretching to the limit with all the hot air in it Clear the stars above to make some room for this balloon Don't cry to me that there's no-thing worth believing When all that you believe is nothingness Who will save your soul when you've turned your heroes mortal? Float away upon your bloated head Head so wide Nothing inside Stretching to the limit with all the hot air in it Clear the stars above to make some room for this balloon Take a holiday from the way that you've been If all the world's against you, there's probably a reason & it's not just me You vilify your money but insist that it judge you You call yourself a thinker, but it's miles above you to do more than repeat the flavor of the week until it's next week Head so wide Nothing inside Stretching to the limit with all the hot air in it Clear the stars above to make some room for this balloon

She's making a hole to let in the rain And stop her mind from wandering again The man in her life doesn't mean to be mean But he left her before & he keeps leaving His mind won't let go of the girl from before He's dragging his boots all over her floor Dirt from her garden all over her heart She just planted the seed and he tore it apart He's a big baby, toddling around He's a big baby to be bringing her down She's in danger of drowning if she can't find her way out With the tears that she's crying, it's raining in her house Raining in her house He's telling the truth when he looks in her eyes His sincerity hurts worse than lies She let in the rain, it's coming in sheets & now he's got her mud all over his feet It mattered before, it won't matter now She's saving her life, the only way she knows how She's holding her breath & diving down deep Her waterlogged heart only hurts when she dreams She's a big baby, toddling around She's a big baby to be bringing her down She's in danger of drowning if she can't find her way out With the tears that she's crying, it's raining in her house Raining in her house

Aurora 03:35
Aurora, Aurora I've just got to tell you I can't take it anymore I'm going to California We've had more bad times than good times Now it's time for goodbyes We can't fake it anymore I'll drop this tired disguise & fly away from you I've got nothing to say to you You can say anything you need to believe just as long as you don't say it to me Aurora, Aurora I bought these flowers for you You just had to know how I have adored you It takes time to make things happen, but it's not the time that matters Perhaps I wasn't honest I hope that makes it easier For you to forget me & stop wasting time on me You can say that I'm a child who only thinks of himself Just say it to somebody else Was it all in my head? Or was it wrong how I left it? I'll never get over how you cared for me You're a talented girl & I wish you the world I was only ever handsome in your poetry But I ran away from this I'm sorry about the mess Insult me if you will, & I think that you might I'm just praying that you're not right

Lover, don't come over Don't wanna see your smilin' face no more Your touchin' makes me happy, but your leavin' makes me cry So lover, don't you come to me tonight Lover, don't come over Take my breakin' heart away for good My mind's made up for good now You ain't no good for me & it ain't no good to sit & think of things we'll never be So lover, don't come over Lover, stay at home Lover, please be gentle & lover, please be kind Don't find another lover before I've had my share Of the blues you blew my way the day you left I don't wanna see you cry, girl Wipe the tears from your eyes Stick out your chin begin again with your new life Before you don't come over, I just want you to know Though you're gone, I'll be drea-min' of you tonight So lover, don't you tempt me & lover, don't you cry The good & the bad we've both been through Is through for now for me & you There's nothin' left to do but say goodbye There's nothin' left to do but say goodbye

I will wait here I will bleed for many days If I die here I will die in disarray How long is forever? How good is the best you'll ever have? How long is forever? Just as long and good as the memory of it lasts I will taste this now in the flavor of a kiss I release this lock & unclench an open fist How long is forever? How good is the best you'll ever have? How long is forever? Just as long and good as the memory of it lasts How near was eternal? So close that you felt it as it passed? How long is forever? Just as long & good as the memory of it lasts

Cartwheeling 02:45
I fear I've fallen down 'cause now I'm staring at the ceiling & I'm fearing this new feeling doesn't feel the way it's feeling Trying new things is all the rage until the new thing is old age Then it will send you reeling & cartwheeling & cartwheeling The house of cards my cards can house keeps me on my heels I play this game of cat and mouse that's losing its appeal So swallow that pill & suck it down 'cause you may not get another round This time, it's for real so cartwheel so cartwheel My whole life is spinning 'round But this old world still spins around It takes a bit of talking down What it's worth to figure out You need to understand that you hold life in your hand so forget what you had planned & start your yielding & cartwheeling & cartwheeling
10.
You & I in red & white Black & blue, I'm here for you we are Two angels falling in love Further from the firmament Our hellish love is heaven-sent we are Two angels falling in love Wickedness is only what you make of it Letting others tell you what to do is the mistake of it I don't care where you have been or if you've seen the things I've seen We are two angels falling in love I will have no others before you, my love There is only one thing now that we have still to do, my love To commit our profane crime & together, pay the sacred price We are two angels falling in love Two angels falling in love Two angels falling in love

This Old Man 03:19
This old man, he played a foolish game The same one that you have A long the road that leads to nowhere fast & this man was wrapped up in his vice He always drove so fast Much faster than his wife, his daughter & his son So take care of yourself Oh! Take care of yourself Take care of yourself, 'cause others care for you This old man, he wasn't the one to suffer The tears he cried were few to the torrents shed by all his next of kin & this old man, why did he go so young? Why couldn't he give it up? When he died, he was older than he was So take care of yourself Oh! Take care of yourself Take care of yourself, 'cause others care for you To all the young fools & the old youngsters Your days are longer than you ever knew So please take care of you So take care of yourself Oh! Take care of yourself Take care of yourself, 'cause others care for you Take care of yourself Oh! Take care of yourself Take care of yourself, 'cause others care for you

Sometimes I feel like I died in the crash & all of my future is bits of my past cycled back & forth like a revolving door to a dream that never has been So I bought a red car so the drunks see it better It's like the old one had been through a letter shredder Pieces of black and pieces of blue twisted up with my dreaming of making it even You don't get much for secondhand dreams When everything's money, nothing is free Just pennies on the dime Dry your eyes & glide through the maelstrom straight as the crow flies I want to run away Take my shiny red car to another state But the wolf dogs the crow He will never be far Anywhere we go There we are You don't get much for secondhand dreams When everything's money, no one is free Just pennies on the dime Dry your eyes & glide through the maelstrom & try not to cry You don't get much for secondhand dreams When everything's money, no one is free Just pennies on the dime Dry your eyes & glide through the maelstrom straight as the crow flies

I have wasted too much time carrying on like this Problems face you every day, you have got to be a man & solve it The tears have all fallen now the grass is dry It wasn't unnoticed, my reply, I said "This is the last time I will say that it's over now & I'm going away back home Where I can find a little peace & shelter & get myself some sleep" I have wasted all my life wasting all my time I wanted to be living more A dream within a lie The sun is disappearing, now the night will fall A new day beginning as I say to you "This is the last time I will say that it's over now & I'm going away back home Where I can find a little peace & shelter & get myself some sleep" & I will know that it's over now & you can't go home again Unless you quit Unless you quit the game & leave yourself behind This is the last time I will say that it's over now & I'm going away back home Where I can find a little peace & shelter & get myself some sleep & I will know that it's over now & you can't go home again Unless you quit Unless you quit the game & leave yourself behind

about

First things first; yes, I know that "Backwards" isn't spelled like that. The album began as a collection of songs I'd written long ago and never gotten around to recording, and I was going to call it "Lost & Found." Then I found out Mudvayne had an album called that already and I didn't want to anymore.

Meanwhile, my last album, "Soon," got a lot of the older songs because they worked well in a stripped-down setting. They're all pretty reflective, though. Words written while looking back.

As usual, I got a bunch of my amazing friends together to play on the album. I was going to do a CD release show with a full band, but then COVID-19 happened. So, until I can, it'll be free on Bandcamp. How 'bout that?
