about

"Soon" is kind of a joke title; I play most instruments myself when I record, so it takes a LONG time for me to do anything. Several of the songs appeared on a discarded version of the album called "Monsoon" (after one of the songs), and I thought it was bad luck to call it the same thing!

My original idea was to do something simple and stripped-down. I'd been listening to stuff like Joni Mitchell's "Clouds" and Bruce Springsteen's "Nebraska," which were basically just singer and guitar albums, and I wanted to do something like that. It made sense; that's the way I usually perform. My rule was going to be no drums recorded for this album, but I didn't stick to it. I ended up adding drums to the very first song I did!

You can still hear my original idea peeking, through, in the sparser arrangements of most of the tracks, like "Puppetboy" & "Fireflies." I managed to complete 3 songs without adding any percussion at all, which is 3 more than I'd ever done before. I added drumkit to several tunes but only played snare drum on 2 songs, plus one full-kit outtake from my last album (2016's "Only Passing Through") that I finished up for this one. The rest of the percussion is much sparser than what I usually do.

Track Name: Who I've Been Is Who I'll Always Be
I will always be someone to lean on, but I won't be the one who carries you
I will have a shoulder you can cry on, but I couldn't bear to be the cause of your blues
And I will do anything you ask, but not anything you say
And I couldn't live a life getting in your way

I will do my best to make you smile, but I won't be your funny little clown
You can count on having me to count on, but don't count on my always hangin' 'round
But I'll be there for you; just understand it's me
And who I've been is who I'll always be

I will never ask you to stand behind me; I am only happy by your side
I will live my life when you are absent; I will think of you, and the distance won't seem wide
But I've watched you wait for me, so I'll come through for you
'Cause I'm a man, and that's what good men do

And you're my lady, you'll come through for me, too
Track Name: Monsoon
Troubled times are here to stay
Forecast says more on the way
I'm awfully tired of running from myself
But you, like a beacon in the night
Beckoning me with your light,
Say to trust your troubled soul to someone else

When it rains, it pours
Can I hide out in your lagoon
To ride out this storm in the middle of my own monsoon?

You dry my eyes with kisses and you set my mind at ease
It's hard to hear the rain falling at times like these
Without you in my corner, it would blow me all away
So promise that you'll stay beside me every single day

When the sky gets dark, I don't worry
'Cause I'm safe here in your room
You protect me from the furies of my own monsoon

When I think of you, my heart swells up
Just like a big balloon
You keep my boat afloat in the middle of my own monsoon

So stay with me, 'neath this canopy
In my own monsoon
Track Name: Pandora's Bottle
Pride don't come easy, love don't come cheap
But lies are something I tell myself in my sleep
Laughing ain't being happy, like sadness ain't being depressed
If there's anyone who understands this, I haven't met her yet

I've been juggling my vices and this one hit the floor
Now each bottle takes me somewhere that I've been before

So climb the ladder off the wagon
Each rung gets you farther
Or take another shot of trouble
From Pandora's Bottle

The first one seems so simple, like waking from a bad dream
But simple's simply not as simple as it seems
So you drink to numb the pain, and you drink to feel elation
'til you can't tell the suffering from the celebration

I've been screwing up my mind 'til it sticks to what I am
And it finally believes all this is worth a damn

So climb the ladder off the wagon
Each rung gets you farther
Or take another shot of trouble
From Pandora's Bottle

And I know that the dawn will answer you with everything you hide
And I know that your thoughts reveal themselves when there's nothing left inside

So climb the ladder off the wagon
Each rung gets you farther
Or take another shot of trouble
From Pandora's Bottle

Invite disaster to your table
Tell yourself you're gonna
Leave after just another drink
From Pandora's Bottle
Track Name: Puppetboy
Ran away, back again
You play with me and pretend
You pull the string, I obey
Back again, can't escape

I like to tell myself I'm strong
But that falls apart when I begin my falling back to you
But will it ever be enough to rid me of your curse
And is that even what I want to do?

I'm your puppetboy

Hide inside, sit and wait
For the time I create
It didn't work, not surprised
Try again another time

I like to tell myself I'm strong
But that falls apart when I begin my falling back to you
But will it ever be enough to rid me of your curse
And is that even what I want to do?

I'm your puppetboy
Track Name: I Took The Bait
A moment's atonement shouldn't be the death of you and I
But your speaking and seeing are focused on the things that make us die

I took the bait when you hung on to fights that meant our grave
My anger's growing fearsome now
I took the bait

Your questions and sessions grow into a startling array
You hold me too tightly and only make me want to run away

I took the bait when you hung on to fights that meant our grave
My anger's growing fearsome now
I took the bait

And everything that doesn't kill us doesn't make us strong
And everything you throw at me doesn't matter if you're wrong

Forgiving and forgetting are foolish things to build a love around
Reason and responsibility are better friends to have when you are down

I took the bait when you hung on to fights that meant our grave
My anger's growing fearsome now
I took the bait

I took the bait when you carved out a life from my mistakes
And forced me into apathy
I took the bait
Track Name: The Spring in Ireland
My lovely lass, she came to me when winter's grass was growing green
And ice had gone away, my lovely lass, she came
"A pretty day on Innisfree," my lovely lass, she said to me
"Oh won't you take a stroll with me?" my lovely lass, she said

Oh, we enjoyed the spring in Ireland
Oh, we enjoyed it all day

And so, my love, she walked with me; we walked until we reached the sea
My heart was chiming jubilee together as we walked
And set us down beside the sea, through fields of rye and barley
We played our music beautifully, though brought no lute or fife

Oh, we enjoyed the spring in Ireland
Oh, we enjoyed it all day

And so we lay beneath a tree while bathing in our harmony
Beauty all that I could see both far and where we lay
My lover held my hand and we both felt her heart and heard it beat
The same sound that I felt in me beneath my lover's hand

Oh, we enjoyed the spring in Ireland
Oh, we enjoyed it all day
Track Name: The Way You Do
I was talking to a girl from back at school the other day
She said our class reunion's coming up
It was the damndest thing; I couldn't think what I was going to wear
Should I go, so I stayed home

I could play by what they'd want for me and wear myself a suit
I bought one, after all, when I loved money
Or wear cutoffs and flip-flops, and flash the double-deuce at what they think
Why do I gotta say anything at all?

I said "Hey man, I just wanted to get it a little better"
There's more to life than money and talkin' 'bout the weather
I just can't think of nothing that I'd like to do forever
How 'bout you?
Are you happy living life the way you do?

Last night, my dad said I don't try at life; I should get myself a job
I said "I got a job; I sing and play guitar."
I took the 20 that he gave me and left his advice behind
I got all that I need to get me by

I said "Hey man, I just wanted to get it a little better"
There's more to life than money and talkin' 'bout the weather
I just can't think of nothing that I'd like to do forever
How 'bout you?
Are you happy living life the way you do?

I make my music just for me in a room I rent myself
I wake up each new day and do nothing that I hate
Except not having money, but that's a price you pay
And you pay a price for everything these days

I said "Hey man, I just wanted to get it a little better"
There's more to life than money and talkin' 'bout the weather
I just can't think of nothing that I'd like to do forever
How 'bout you?
Are you happy living life the way you do?
Track Name: Beyond Her Dreams of Fireflies
The space between is killing me
The distance set in place by her
What I love, lost again in the drowning of a dream deferred

She's dreaming of fireflies while I'm dreaming of her
Looking for love or what she finds
Impossible images of life beyound her dreams
Of fireflies

The time away and time kept awake
Make it difficult for me
My familiar phrases sent to very different places
I'm losing heat

She's dreaming of fireflies while I'm dreaming of her
Looking for love or what she finds
Impossible images of life beyound her dreams
Of fireflies
Track Name: Color Me In
Color me in
Come on and color me
Put words in my mouth
Paint yourself on my skin
Look for yourself in the eyes of everyone you meet

Equate those who hurt you with those who disagree
Changing the subject to your pet-cause frequently
You won't even let me quit the game until I feel the same

So color me in
Come on and color me in
Where society ends is where you begin
Can you even be satisfied?

'Cause it's some other battle when one battle ends
Can't you be friendly, at least to your friends?
I swear I remember laughing by your side
Or has that part of you died?

So color me in
Come on and color me in
Burn down your straw man and say that I'm him
Tolerance is easy when everyone thinks like you

Because you can't have a dialog all by yourself
So extend your empathy to someone else
Anger feeds a narrative and not a conversation, if I'm not mistaken

So color me in
Come on and color me
Put words in my mouth
Paint yourself on my skin
Look for yourself in the eyes of everyone you meet
Until you believe yourself
Track Name: Terminal
Sitting here in the terminal
Waiting for the end of the line
Waiting can be very difficult
She's going out of sight
And I'm out of my mind

It's lonely out here in the terminal
People here know where the story ends
People say goodbyes that they don't mean
I wonder if they'll ever meet again

Solitude brings clarity
Clarity brings hope
I wait 'cause I've got nowhere else to go
One place is another
And everything is strange
Why does everybody have to change?

Why does everybody have to change?

Stuck inside a future flowing slowly toward the past
I know just what to say
I've said it all before
But I don't know if I can say it anymore
I don't think that I can say it anymore

I think I might stay in the terminal
And pretend that the end is the beginning
And that I didn't fail you in the simplest of ways
But I'm tangled in this twisted web we're spinning

Solitude brings clarity
Clarity brings hope
I wait 'cause I've got nowhere else to go
One place is another
And everything is strange
Why does everybody have to change?

Why does everybody have to change?
